Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono confirmed that he and Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani will attend the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, later this week.
"According to our plan, the foreign minister and MPR speaker will attend the funeral," Sugiono said after welcoming the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta on Monday.
"The funeral ceremony will take place on Thursday, 9 July, and we plan to attend there. We are awaiting confirmation regarding the time and venue where we can join the ceremony," the minister said.
Sugiono said after receiving an official invitation from Tehran, Jakarta initially informed the Iranian government that Indonesia would be represented by its Ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah Soemirat, for the funeral ceremony.
The decision was made for technical reasons, as key ministers and other government officials were required to remain in Indonesia to prepare for official visits and attend other state engagements.
However, the Indonesian government later received notification from Iran stating that access would be limited to officials holding positions higher than ambassador.
To ensure Indonesia is represented during Ali Khamenei's funeral, the government decided to send Sugiono and Muzani.
“We remain in communication, as we greatly respect the late leader. Considering the large number of people expected to attend the funeral, the Iranian authorities will certainly arrange an appropriate place for us,” Sugiono said.
According to Iranian news agency IRNA, the late leader’s body, along with those of his companions, was transferred to the Grand Mosalla on Friday (July 4) and placed in the main prayer hall for the two-day public farewell ceremony.
The funeral procession in Tehran began on Monday after a public viewing at the Grand Mosalla over the weekend (July 5–6).
Further rites are scheduled in the holy city of Qom, followed by ceremonies in Baghdad, Karbala, and Najaf in Iraq, before burial in Mashhad on July 9.
