Lead investigator Keith Arnaud told jurors that Yorgen Fenech claimed former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat warned him in advance that alleged middleman Melvin Theuma was going to be arrested.
Continuing his testimony in Fenech’s murder trial, Arnaud said Fenech claimed Muscat asked him whether he trusted Theuma, to which Fenech allegedly replied: “Of course not. He records me.”
According to Arnaud, Fenech claimed Muscat then warned him: “Take care, he’s going to be arrested.”
The court also heard that investigators examined messages exchanged between Fenech and Muscat, including one conversation in which Fenech wrote, “I’ll see you later, Prime Minister,” with Muscat replying, “Yes, see you tomorrow at 1.30pm.”
Arnaud testified that police later questioned Muscat about Fenech’s allegations.
According to the lead investigator, Muscat denied all of the claims, including that the pair had held private meetings at Castille or that he had passed on information about the murder investigation.
The court also heard that investigators analysed location data from Fenech’s mobile phone after he claimed to have visited Castille twice as part of their inquiries.
Yorgen Fenech is standing trial charged with complicity in the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and criminal association to commit the murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
