Super Typhoon Bavi may enter PAR Tuesday evening, to be called Inday

MANILA, Philippines —Super typhoon Bavi is forecast to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday evening, July 7, or early Wednesday, July 8, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Once Bavi enters the PAR, it will be given a local name “Inday.”

Based on the latest track of Pagasa issued at 11 p.m. on Monday, Bavi was located 2,010 kilometers east of Central Luzon, moving west northwestward at 30 kilometers per hour.

It packed maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kilometers per hour.

Bavi has a low chance of making landfall in the country, and is expected to gradually weaken as it passes near extreme Northern Luzon towards east of Taiwan, according to weather specialist Veronica Torres during Pagasa’s 5 am weather advisory.

She explained that despite a low chance of landfall, wind signals may be hoisted over the northern and eastern portions of Northern Luzon by evening or early Wednesday.

“Regarding the landfall scenario, what we see is that it less likely, but it’s possible that it (Bavi) will closely approach the province of Batanes, and raising the tropical wind signal is still not ruled out,” Torres explained.

Gale warnings associated with rough to very rough sea conditions will be issued by Wednesday over the northern and eastern seaboards of the country, according to Pagasa.

But Bavi and the enhanced southwest monsoon may bring heavy rains over the northern and western portions of the country in the coming days.

“It (Bavi) could still draw in the southwest monsoon, so we can expect many areas to be affected by it in the coming days,” Torres said.

Meanwhile, localized thunderstorms are expected to prevail over Metro Manila and the rest of the country, bringing partly to partly skies with isolated rain showers.

The easterlies, or the warm wind coming from the Pacific Ocean, may bring gloomy skies and occasional rains over Aurora and Cagayan.

At the same time, Zamboanga Peninsula, BARMM, Lanao del Norte, and Sultan Kudarat are expected to experience cloudy skies with scattered rains due to the southwest monsoon.

The southwest monsoon is forecast to bring rains over the western portion of Visayas and Mindanao until Thursday, Torres said.

“By tomorrow until thursday posible magpaulan ang habagat sa mag kanlurang bahagi ng visayas at mindanao,” Torres reported.
