MANILA, Philippines – The Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte enters day 2 on Tuesday, as the prosecution expected to start presenting its cases under Article IV, which centers on allegations of grave threats.
Monday’s proceedings focused largely on organizational and procedural issues, including the election of Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero as presiding officer, formal entry of appearance of the prosecution and defense teams, and the determination of the order in which the Articles of Impeachment will be presented.
Here are highlights from Day 1 | July 6, 2026
Following his election as presiding officer, Escudero maintained that 16 votes needed to convict Duterte
Opening statements were delivered by both the prosecution and the defense.
The opening day also saw the first legal clash between the two camps, with the Senate impeachment court denying the prosecution’s motion to read the Articles of Impeachment and arraign Duterte.
The prosecution announced it will present the Articles of Impeachment in this order: Article IV (grave threats), Article I (confidential funds), Article III (bribery), and Article II (unexplained wealth).
The impeachment court issued subpoenas to two National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) officials expected to testify for the prosecution.
The court emphasized due process, impartiality, and adherence to constitutional procedures throughout the trial. /dp
