The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has announced plans to invest $11 million in a 3.5-megawatt solar power plant to provide electricity to communities in the Ambursa area of Kebbi State.
The Managing Director of the agency, Dr Abba Abubakar-Aliyu, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi. He said the project’s technical partner, KELM-Elicoms, would inject an additional $6 million, adding that the plant is expected to provide electricity to more than 1,500 households.
Abubakar-Aliyu said the REA, under the Federal Ministry of Power, is mandated to expand electricity access by connecting unserved communities to the national grid and improving supply in underserved areas.
He added that the Federal Government had secured $750 million from the World Bank under the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) programme to expand electricity access to 17.5 million Nigerians through the deployment of 1,300 mini-grids nationwide.
According to him, 250 of the mini-grids will be interconnected with the national grid, while the Kebbi project forms part of the initiative.
The REA boss said beneficiaries would receive prepaid meters to eliminate estimated billing, adding that the project also includes an eight-kilometre distribution network and battery storage facilities.
Governor Nasir Idris assured the agency of the state government’s full support to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
