Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia made the right diplomatic decision by planning to send Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono and People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani to the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, a legislator said.
Syamsu Rizal, Commission I member of the House of Representatives (DPR), said in Jakarta on Tuesday that the planned attendance reflects Indonesia’s high regard for its enduring ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“The presence of Indonesian representatives will demonstrate our nation’s respect and empathy toward Iran for what befell it and strengthen bilateral relations,” he remarked.
Rizal further supported the move, highlighting the importance of “polite, open, and mutually respectful diplomacy” not only to maintain bilateral ties but also to reinforce friendship between the two countries.
The lawmaker also urged the government to continue ensuring that Indonesia remains true to its free and active foreign policy, which has long steered the country to contribute to global affairs without being dragged into bloc rivalries.
“Indonesia must continue to call for an end to war, reject any form of aggression undermining the sovereignty of states, and advocate for peaceful conflict resolutions,” he said, noting that the 1945 Constitution mandates the state to contribute to world peace.
He emphasized that all countries, including those in the Middle East, are entitled to protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with international law.
“We hope that the situation in the Middle East will soon improve. Indonesia must continue striving to be part of the solution, facilitate dialogue, and echo the importance of peace, stability, and respect for international law,” Rizal concluded.
The parliamentarian made the statement after Foreign Minister Sugiono unveiled plans to represent Indonesia at Khamenei’s funeral alongside the MPR speaker the day before.
“The funeral ceremony will take place on Thursday, 9 July, and we plan to attend it. We are awaiting confirmation regarding the time and venue where we can join the ceremony,” he said in Jakarta.
Muzani confirmed the agenda on Tuesday, saying that he and Sugiono intend to represent the government and people of Indonesia at the funeral.
