The Federal Government has flagged off the distribution of 80,640 bags of fertiliser to 20,160 registered smallholder farmers in Imo, Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi states under its Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (FISP).
The intervention, implemented by the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF), was launched on Monday at Ndubuisi Kanu (Heroes) Square in Owerri, Imo State, to support farmers ahead of the 2026 wet farming season.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of NADF, Mohammed Ibrahim, represented by the Fund’s General Manager, Technical Services, Ernest Ihedigbo, said the programme was designed to bridge critical farm input gaps, boost agricultural productivity and strengthen farmers’ resilience.
He said each of the 20,160 beneficiaries across the four states would receive fertiliser grants under the scheme.
He said the programme is a home-grown intervention aimed at supporting smallholder farmers, promoting local fertiliser production, creating jobs and improving food security.
Ihedigbo said the initiative seeks to stabilise food prices through targeted input support, increase productivity by closing input gaps and strengthen agricultural value chains to drive economic growth.
Representing the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, the minister’s Senior Special Adviser, Ibrahim Tanimu, described the programme as a strategic investment towards achieving food self-sufficiency.
He said the intervention demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to reducing production costs and increasing crop yields through direct support to farmers.
Tanimu added that a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Imo State Government, the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) and NADF would ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process.
Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by the Deputy Governor, Lady Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, described the initiative as a major boost for agricultural development in the South-East.
She urged beneficiaries to use the fertilisers for farming and avoid diversion, saying the programme would improve harvests, create jobs and strengthen rural livelihoods.
