Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto bestowed Indonesia’s highest order of merit on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jakarta on Monday, hailing his role in deepening relations between the two countries.
“Today, as president of the Republic of Indonesia, I thank His Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his willingness to receive the highest mark of honor from Indonesia, namely Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipurna,” he remarked.
Issuing a joint statement with the Indian leader at the Merdeka Palace, Prabowo described the star-shaped civil honor as recognition of Modi’s leadership and contribution to elevating Indonesia-India ties to a strategic comprehensive partnership.
He said the prime minister had demonstrated continued efforts to further step up cooperation between the two nations.
The president also linked the honor to Modi’s evident support for a range of programs and projects that align with Indonesia’s development agendas.
Modi is the second Indian leader to receive the decoration after India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who was recognized for strengthening bilateral relations and pioneering the Non-Aligned Movement.
“The visit of Prime Minister Modi today marks a milestone and reflects the two countries’ shared commitment to advancing the comprehensive strategic partnership through concrete and mutually beneficial cooperation,” Prabowo said.
In response, Modi welcomed the highest state honor and extended gratitude to Prabowo, as well as the people and government of Indonesia.
“This honor is not exclusive to me; it is for millions of Indians, reflecting the sentiment of friendship of the Indonesian people and symbolizing the tight, historic ties between India and Indonesia,” he said.
He acknowledged that the two countries have intensified relations in recent years, underscoring the evolving comprehensive strategic partnership established in 2018.
Modi is on a two-day visit to Indonesia to discuss bilateral relations, sign cooperation documents, and reaffirm Indonesia’s support for the revitalization of the Prambanan Temple, with a visit to the historic site in Yogyakarta scheduled for July 8.
