Jakarta (ANTARA) -
The Ministry of Communication and Digital has underscored the importance of developing national compute clusters as a key driver of Indonesia's competitiveness in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria said Indonesia must move beyond being merely a technology user by expanding its computing capacity and strengthening its pool of digital talent.
"We need two important strategies. The first is strengthening our position in AI infrastructure development. The second is strengthening our position in compute clusters, including enhancing Indonesia's digital talent pool so we can compete more effectively in the global landscape," he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Patria said the need for compute clusters is becoming increasingly urgent as modern AI relies heavily on large-scale computing power. Such infrastructure will support AI model development, research, innovation, and the creation of a wide range of homegrown AI solutions.
According to him, expanding computing capacity must be accompanied by the development of a strong national ecosystem to ensure Indonesia becomes not only a market for foreign technology but also a major player in the global AI industry.
"We should become a significant player that helps shape the direction of AI technology adoption in Indonesia," Patria emphasized.
However, he said Indonesia's success will be measured not only by the volume of investment it attracts but also by its ability to build an integrated AI ecosystem involving the government, industry, academia, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), communities, and domestic innovators.
He noted that AI development has been designated as a strategic priority under the Digital Indonesia 2045 Vision.
The development of AI is expected to achieve three main objectives, promoting inclusive technology, empowering the national ecosystem, and strengthening Indonesia's digital sovereignty.
"We do not want to be just a market or a user. We want to secure a strategic position in the global AI industry value chain," he said.
Patria added that Indonesia has strong foundations to achieve these goals, including abundant critical minerals needed by the AI industry, energy resources to support digital infrastructure, and a demographic bonus that will provide a future pool of digital talent.
He also warned that AI development has evolved beyond a purely technological issue and has become a key element of global geopolitical competition.
As a result, Indonesia must strengthen its national capabilities to navigate global changes while taking advantage of emerging opportunities, he said.
