
MANILA, Philippines—The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday has placed local government units (LGUs) on heightened alert as Super Typhoon “Bavi” nears the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
The department particularly refers to places in Northern Luzon and other high-risk areas.
“Now is the time to prepare. We are directing all LGUs to move early, activate their disaster response mechanisms, and ensure that communities in high-risk areas are ready should conditions worsen,” the DILG said in a statement.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Bavi” is expected to enter the PAR between Tuesday evening and early Wednesday, when it will be given the local name “Inday.”

Earlier, Palace press officer Castro said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. instructed the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and all relevant agencies to implement a whole-of-government response before Bavi enters PAR.

“While current projections indicate a low probability of landfall, the weather disturbance is expected to intensify the Southwest Monsoon, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, flooding, and possible landslides across several parts of the country,” said the DILG.
LGUs were directed to monitor official weather updates, activate emergency response teams as needed, identify high-risk areas, and prepare for possible evacuations.

Furthermore, local leaders were ordered to ready rescue equipment and relief supplies, and ensure evacuation centers are prepared for affected residents.
They were also instructed to clear drainage systems and waterways, and inspect critical infrastructure.In addition, LGUs were told to step up public information campaigns urging residents to prepare emergency go bags, monitor official advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.

The DILG likewise reminded LGUs to strictly implement Operation L!STO protocols and other rainy season preparedness measures.
It stressed that prompt action, close coordination, and strong local leadership are essential for reducing disaster risks.
“We expect every local chief executive to remain at their respective stations, lead from the front, and act decisively to protect lives and keep their communities safe,” the DILG said. /apl
