Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani stated that Indonesia and India have a shared responsibility to maintain regional stability.
Puan made the remarks during her speech welcoming Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a state visit to the DPR building in Jakarta on Tuesday.
"At a time when the world is shaped by rising great-power rivalry, supply chain disruptions, food and energy crises, and the impacts of climate change, Indonesia and India have a shared responsibility to maintain regional stability and strengthen development cooperation," she said.
Puan noted that amid growing global geopolitical and geoeconomic volatility, nations must step up to protect their sovereignty and national interests, while ensuring that development delivers justice and prosperity for the people.
She emphasized that stronger international cooperation is essential to promoting a more peaceful, inclusive, and equitable global order.
"The DPR believes that close synergy between the legislative and executive branches is crucial to strengthening international cooperation amid global dynamics," she added.
According to Puan, parliamentary diplomacy complements government-to-government engagement by broadening channels for dialogue, fostering mutual understanding, strengthening trust, and building political support between nations.
She also welcomed the establishment of the India-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group by the Indian Parliament in February 2026, expressing hope that it would work closely with the DPR's bilateral cooperation group with India, which was formed in January 2025.
Prime Minister Modi visited the Indonesian parliament as part of his state visit to Jakarta, where he delivered an address before Indonesian lawmakers.
Earlier on Tuesday, President Prabowo Subianto received Modi at the Merdeka Palace for a bilateral meeting aimed at expanding Indonesia-India cooperation across a range of strategic sectors.
