25-year-old dies in Albufeira crash as driver leaves scene

A 25-year-old man died in the early hours of Monday after the car he was travelling in crashed on the EM526 road in Branqueira area of Albufeira.

According to the GNR, the victim was travelling as a passenger in the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and another passenger left the scene following the crash and are being sought by authorities.

Emergency services were alerted at 4.38am, with firefighters from Albufeira, the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) and the GNR responding to the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are being investigated by the GNR’s Road Accident Investigation Unit (NICAV), which carried out forensic examinations at the scene.

The victim’s body was taken to the Portimão Forensic Medical Office for an autopsy.
