President Sergio Mattarella stopped
Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini from returning to his former post
as interior minister after his acquittal in a migrant boat
kidnap case made it possible for him to move from the transport
ministry last year, a leading member of his right-wing League
party said Tuesday.
"Salvini should have become Interior Minister at the beginning
of the legislature; he wasn't granted it because he was on
trial, but once acquitted, he should have immediately gone to
the interior ministry," said Senator Claudio Borghi on L'Aria
che tira on La7.
"There was a fundamental injustice: he's Deputy Prime Minister
like (post-Berlusconi Forza Italia leader Antonio) Tajani, who
is also foreign minister, and Salvini should have been given the
interior ministry post.
"He wasn't given it due to a terrible injustice.
"From what I understand and what is being said, it was probably
denied to him at the instigation of the President of the
Republic."
