‘The Bear's Ayo Edebiri Set to Write and Star in Live-Action 'Barney' Movie

Ayo Edebiri is stirring up the truth about her full name.

The Bear star revealed her famous moniker is simply a nickname during a GQ friendship quiz with costar Jeremy Allen White, admitting her birth name is Funmilayo Edebiri after her longtime colleague came up short.

“There’s Ayo in it, but it’s not your name,” White said, trying to recall her birth name. “Your first name is not Ayo. The last three letters of your first name is Ayo.”

But that wasn’t good enough for the Bottoms star, who replied, “Obviously.”

To be fair, it seemed the Shameless alum’s head was still in the kitchen during the quiz. After all, he also forgot her birthday when asked about the date. It’s “October 3rd,” Edebiri quipped before jokingly adding, “I’m gonna smoke your ass.”

And fans were just as baffled as the I Love LA actress—who has costarred alongside White on The Bear for five seasons—for her pal’s forgetfulness.

“He doesnt even know her NAME ???” one fan commented under a clip of the interview shared to TikTok, while another quipped at their sibling dynamic, writing, “My brother answering questions about me.”

Meanwhile, others couldn’t get over how stunning the 30-year-old’s name was, with one user commenting, “Funmilayo is a beautiful name.”

And as the Nigerian American actress has previously noted, it has a layered meaning.

“Ayo means ‘joy,’” she told W Magazine in 2025. “It’s short for Funmilayo, which means ‘Give me joy.”

While she certainly does spread happiness wherever she goes, the Emmy winner hates nothing more than when people spell her joyful name wrong.

“I have a pet peeve,” she said. “I hate when people write a message to me, or send an email to me, or send one to anybody, and they spell your name wrong in the email or in the message. That’s just so frustrating to me.”

She added of spelling her last name, “Two E’s, two I’s, please.”
