Why Matthew McConaughey Changed His Mind About Letting Son Levi Pursue Acting
Matthew McConaughey is feeling more than alright, alright, alright.
After all, Levi MConaughey—the Oscar winner's oldest son with wife Camila Alves McConaughey—officially became an adult when he turned 18 on July 7.
"That’s a # buddy," Matthew captioned an Instagram photo of himself and his look-alike son as they rocked matching button-down shirts and jeans. "Enjoy and handle your new freedoms."
And that extends to Levi's desires to pursue a career in acting. As the 56-year-old previously explained, he was hesitant at first to allow his kids—including daughter Vida, 16, and son Livingston, 13—to follow in his footsteps.
“The first 15 years in Hollywood I was like, ‘I’d never want my kid to grow up in the business,’” Matthew told People in September. “And when I hit about 40, right about the time we had Levi, I looked around at how many special people I’ve met in my life, how much travel and what an awesome, healthy, cool experience that’s been for me in my life.”
That's why he's done gate-keeping Hollywood from his children, who primarily grew up in Austin, Texas.
“I was like, ‘Where are you coming up with this idea you don’t want any of your kids to do it?’” the Interstellar star recalled. "It’d be a privilege if they would be able to."
But that's not to say Matthew thinks Levi will benefit from nepotism. As he put it, "There’s a line between entitlement and shame. If you can look it right in the eye and deal with it, and if it works out, you’ll see, it’s a hell of a roller coaster."
"It’s hard to keep your feet on the ground to sift out the real stuff from the BS," the dad of three continued. “It’s important that he has his own ownership of who he is and becomes. And [acting] will be a part of that if he continues to do it, part of finding his identity, but it can’t be his full identity.”

Likewise, Levi acknowledges that his famous last name will only get him so far in the industry.
“As much as people can say, ‘You got this because of your father or your mother,’” Levi told the outlet, “they can open the door, but then it’s going to be up to me to do my thing once I get in there. That’s on me.”
