The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Rabiu Umar, has encouraged Nigerians to embrace golf, describing the sport as a platform for healthy living, relaxation and stronger professional relationships.
Umar made the call at the grand finale of the 2026 Upstream Invitational Golf Tournament, organised by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) at the Ogunu Golf Resort in Warri, Delta State.
The week-long championship brought together regulators, oil and gas executives, industry stakeholders and golfers in a competition designed to foster networking and deepen collaboration within Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
Speaking after participating in the tournament, Umar said the event had further strengthened the growing partnership between the NMDPRA, its sister agency, the NUPRC, and other stakeholders in the industry.
“The tournament is very good, it is for collaboration, relaxation and sharing of ideals outside the formal office settings. I will advise everybody to register and know how to play golf,” Umar said.
He noted that beyond the competitive aspect of the game, golf promotes physical fitness while creating an informal environment for strategic discussions and relationship-building among industry leaders.
The NMDPRA chief executive said his participation in the tournament reflected the renewed commitment of both regulatory agencies to work together in advancing efficiency, energy security and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
Earlier, the Commission Chief Executive of the NUPRC, Mrs Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, said the tournament served a purpose beyond sporting competition.
According to her, “it provides a vital, informal avenue for regulatory and corporate leaders to exchange ideas, foster partnerships, and build camaraderie outside of formal office settings”.
The tournament, which began on June 22, featured competitions involving caddies, professional golfers, members of the Ogunu Golf Club and invited guests before ending with a gala night where winners, sponsors and key industry stakeholders were honoured with trophies and awards.
Among dignitaries at the event were Chairman of the NUPRC, Senator Magnus Abe; the Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, Tony Attah, who represented the National Security Adviser; and the Secretary to the Delta State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu.
