MANILA, Philippines — The Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte enters third day on Wednesday, with the House prosecution panel set to continue presenting witnesses and evidence under of the Articles of Impeachment, which accuses the Vice President of making grave threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
The proceedings come as Duterte’s camp seeks to halt the trial before the Supreme Court.

Key developments so far:
Duterte allies led by lawyer Israelito Torreon filed a 16-page urgent motion before the Supreme Court seeking to stop the trial and questioned the authority of Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero to preside over the impeachment court.
The challenge echoes objections earlier raised by Sens. Alan Peter Cayetano and Pia Cayetano, who argued that Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian should preside over the trial.
Prosecutors presented NBI Senior Agent John Mark Calilung, who authenticated digital evidence related to the alleged threats. His testimony was met with repeated objections from the defense.
Prosecutors also announced plans to call Vice President Duterte as a hostile witness during the presentation of Article IV.
The vice president showed up in the Senate hours before the proceedings but did not appear before the impeachment court.
The impeachment court is expected to hear more witness testimonies, rule on objections, and receive additional documentary and digital evidence as the prosecution continues its case. /dp
