Marcoleta not fit to travel, to remain under medical observation -- PNP

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Rodante Marcoleta, facing plunder charges over the P75 million in undeclared campaign funds, remains under close observation and is awaiting his medical results as part of his booking process at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital.

Marcoleta, who experienced chest pains and high blood pressure on Monday during his arrest, was said to be conscious, responsive, and not in cardiorespiratory distress on Wednesday, July 8, according to the PNP Health Service.

However, PNP Spokesperson PCol. Allen Rae Co said the transfer of Marcoleta to the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas on Wednesday is still unlikely, while he is not yet medically cleared to travel.

“It (transfer) is still improbable that it would be today as I was informed by the Health Service that he is not yet fit for travel,” Co said.

PNP Health Service Chief of Internal Medicine PLt. Col. Benaly Bayani informed that Marcoleta, although clinically stable, requires continued monitoring due to his fluctuating blood pressure.

“Senator Marcoleta is clinically stable and is not in critical condition; however, his blood pressure still needs to be monitored,” Bayani explained.

She later confirmed that Marcoleta is still not fit to travel, further saying that the results of Marcoleta’s two-dimensional echocardiography, or 2d echo, and blood chemistry tests are likely to be completed by Wednesday afternoon or on Thursday, July 9.

Co said that the authorities are only waiting for Marcoleta to be cleared and be declared medically capable to travel and proceed with the commitment process.

“This is the only thing we are waiting for—whether he will be declared cleared or (fit) to travel—and then we will proceed with the commitment process,” Co said.

He, moreover, said that the arrest warrant of Marcoleta had already been returned to the Sandiganbayan, while a commitment order had been issued last Monday, July 6.

“The warrant of arrest of Senator Rodante Marcoleta has already been delivered to the court (and) a commitment order has already been issued,” Co added. /mr
