A policeman was killed and three civilians injured in an attack by gunmen in Gembu, headquarters of the Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The attack occurred on Sunday, the same day a herder was killed and more than 10 farmers were injured during a clash between farmers and herders in Pangri village, Bali Local Government Area.
Following the Gembu attack, the Sardauna local government council imposed a night curfew from 9pm to 5am until further notice.
A statement dated July 6 and signed by the council’s Director of Administration and General Services, Eric Mathew Vakude, said the curfew was approved by the council chairman, Hon. J. Umar, to protect lives and property.
Meanwhile, the clash in Pangri reportedly began after cattle allegedly destroyed a farmer’s crops.
Sources said the farmer invited a policeman to arrest the owner of the cattle, but the herder allegedly resisted arrest and was shot by the officer.
The incident sparked a reprisal attack by other herders, who allegedly mobilised and attacked the farming community.
More than 10 farmers sustained serious injuries, while several houses were set ablaze.
A resident, Dauda Pangri, told Daily Trust that the violence erupted on market day, forcing traders to flee.
He said the injured were taken to Bali General Hospital for treatment, while police personnel were deployed to restore order.
The Taraba Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Victor Mshelizah, did not respond to calls seeking comment.
