Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday framed the Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta as a manifestation of the millennium-old relationship between Indonesian and Indian civilizations.
He highlighted the enduring ties during a visit to the temple compound with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“This visit carries special significance. More than a symbol of Indonesia’s historical and cultural glory, the Prambanan Temple stands as a reminder of the strong connection between Indonesian and Indian civilizations that has endured more than 1,000 years,” Prabowo said.
Speaking alongside Modi, the president emphasized that Indonesia-India relations have transcended political, economic, and defense cooperation, noting that the bilateral friendship finds its roots in shared cultural values, scientific determination, and mutual respect.
He observed that the elements binding the two nations remain apparent today, including in the form of the Hindu temple complex.
“The Prambanan Temple is not merely a historic site; it lives as a symbol of the great Indonesian civilization that upholds science, art, spirituality, and humanity,” he affirmed.
Furthermore, the head of state noted that the site’s added significance for both countries is also evident in the temple reliefs depicting the Ramayana, an ancient epic popular in Indonesia and India.
He expressed hope that Modi’s landmark visit to the historic site would deepen the friendship between the two nations through greater cultural appreciation.
Prabowo asserted that culture could serve as a bridge uniting nations, strengthening mutual understanding, and building trust to shape a shared future.
“Let’s hope that the friendship between Indonesia and India will grow stronger and closer and continue producing concrete cooperation that delivers benefits for our states and our peoples,” he remarked.
Prabowo hosted Modi at the temple following their bilateral talks in Jakarta a day earlier. The highlight of the visit was the launch of a project designated as the Indonesia-India Collaborative Cultural Heritage Conservation for Prambanan Temple.
