At least 15 people are feared trapped after a large portion of a building in Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, officials have said. Teams from the fire brigade, police, and other emergency response agencies have reached the spot in the Moshi area. A rescue operation is underway, and ambulances have been rushed to the site. The area around the building has been being cordoned off.
Officials said the structure that collapsed on Wednesday is the administrative building of the Waste-to-Energy project for which the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has an agreement with Antony Lara Renewable Energy Limited.
Vijay Suryavanshi, Pimpri Chinchwad’s Municipal Commissioner, said, “This is the administrative block of the Waste-to-Energy project of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. This building is next to a waste mound. Due to very heavy rain in the area, a large portion of the mound came down like a landslide and hit this building.” Officials said the mound comprised ‘legacy waste’, meaning untreated solid garbage and industrial byproducts left in old landfills or dumpsites for long periods.
“There were around 20 people in the building at the time; four managed to come out and 15-16 people are still inside. A team of the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) has reached the spot, and other teams are already there. Rescue efforts are on,” Suryavanshi said.
