Malta has ranked among the top countries in Europe for household air conditioning use, with 15% of all household energy consumption going towards cooling homes.
New EU figures show that only Cyprus, at 16%, recorded a higher share of household energy being used for air conditioning than Malta.
The figures come as cooling demand continues to surge across Europe. Household energy consumption for space cooling has doubled since 2018, reaching 80.4 thousand terajoules across the EU in 2024 as increasingly hot summers drive more people to rely on air conditioning.
While larger countries such as Italy, Spain and Greece consumed the highest total amount of energy for cooling due to their populations, Malta stands out because such a significant proportion of household electricity is dedicated to keeping homes cool.
With summer temperatures regularly climbing well above 30°C, the figures highlight just how essential air conditioning has become for daily life in Malta.
