
MANILA, Philippines — A total of 159 families that will be affected by the Mindanao Railway project (Tagum segment) will be relocated to Tagum City in Davao del Norte, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said on Wednesday.
According to the DOTr, 62 quadruplex buildings with 248 housing units were already built so far in a 4.2-hectare relocation site in Barangay Mankilam in Tagum City.

“Through a Memorandum of Agreement signed between the DOTr and Tagum local government, the government will shoulder a huge portion of housing payments,” DOTr said in a press release.

“Every family that will benefit from their new house will only pay P1,500 every month for 25 years,” it noted.
DOTr Assistant Secretary for Right-of-Way and Site Acquisition Irish Calaguas said that the agency is prioritizing the right-of-way acquisition first and committed to the construction of the railway project.
Calaguas also underscored the importance of support from the local government units for the big ticket projects of the national government.

“The president sends a clear message that we go beyond just constructing railways. We should also ensure that the families that will be affected will be properly relocated with enough support,” DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said in the same press release.
The Mindanao Railway project phase 1 is a 100-kilometer railway with eight stations that will connect Tagum City, Davao City, and Digos City.

It will span through the provinces of Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur.
The project is expected to serve over 100,000 passengers daily once it is completed. /apl
