Michael J. Fox Caps Return From Acting Retirement With 1st Emmy Nomination In Decade For ‘Shrinking’

Michael J. Fox made a welcome return to acting with a multi-episode arc on Apple TV’s Shrinking. It has now earned him his 18th career acting Emmy nomination in the Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category.

Five years after Fox had announced his “second retirement” from acting in his 2020 memoir, No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, citing effects from the progression of his Parkinson’s disease, he took on the Shrinking role. The character was created for him by Shrinking co-creator Bill Lawrence, co-creator of Fox’s 1996 series Spin City.

On Shrinking, Fox portrays Gerry, a patient with Parkinson’s disease who befriends Paul Rhoades (Harrison Ford), himself recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Ford received his second nomination for the show this morning in the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

This marks Fox’s first Emmy nomination since 2016 when he was nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category for The Good Wife. He has won five Emmys to date, three for Family Ties, one for Boston Legal and one for Rescue Me.
