Maltese MEP Daniel Attard has delivered a passionate speech in the European Parliament, calling for the European Union to suspend its association agreement with Israel while condemning the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
Attard also condemned what he described as ongoing settler violence in the occupied Palestinian territories, saying Palestinian land continues to be seized and that many families have faced violence and intimidation.
While insisting that “no horrors justify each other”, he questioned whether the international response would have been the same had similar actions been carried out by Iran or directed against the Ukrainian people.
He also pointed to the low attendance in the European Parliament chamber during the debate, saying the room would have been “roaring” if the discussion had centred on other global conflicts.
Wrapping up his address, Attard urged the European Union to end the EU-Israel Association Agreement, arguing that recognising Palestine’s right to exist does not come at the expense of Israel’s own right to exist, and calling on the bloc to take stronger action in response to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
What do you make of the points brought up by Attard?
