As part of its 35th anniversary celebrations, Zoomarine Algarve has found an innovative way to give its old staff uniforms a second life – transforming them into comfortable beds and blankets for dogs and cats.
The sustainability initiative saw uniforms retired following the park’s recent rebranding upcycled into 100 pet beds and 75 blankets, reducing textile waste while supporting animal welfare.
Many of the items were distributed to Zoomarine employees who registered to receive a bed or blanket for their own pets, while the remainder will be donated to the Canil São Francisco de Assis animal shelter in Loulé.
The donation includes between six and seven large beds, 28 small beds and 21 blankets, providing extra comfort for animals awaiting adoption.
The project was carried out in partnership with United to Remake, a Portuguese social innovation startup specialising in upcycling and material reuse. The company works with businesses to transform discarded materials into useful new products through sustainable design.
Hugo Brites, Zoomarine Algarve’s communications and marketing director, said the initiative reflects the park’s commitment to extending its values beyond its day-to-day operations.
“Our old team uniforms, which would otherwise have been recycled, have gained a new purpose as beds and blankets that will contribute to the comfort and wellbeing of many animals,” he said. “It is a simple initiative, but one with special meaning for us because it involves our employees and allows us to support a cause that is closely linked to our connection with the animal world.”
The project forms part of Zoomarine’s broader sustainability strategy, which aims to embed more responsible and circular practices across its operations.
The Algarve theme park says the initiative demonstrates how materials that have reached the end of one purpose can be repurposed to create practical benefits for both people and animals.
