Live: US military launches a wave of strikes on Iran

The US military says it has launched a fresh series of strikes against Iran to "degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation" in the Strait of Hormuz.

It comes hours after President ‌Donald Trump declared that a ceasefire with Iran was "over".

US striking cities well outside Strait of Hormuz

Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) is reporting power has been knocked out in parts of the south-eastern city of Chabahar, on Iran's southern coastline east of the Strait of Hormuz.

Mehr is also reporting explosions have been heard in the province of Bushehr, further north-west of the strait in the upper half of the Persian Gulf.

Trump flagged US strikes in advance at NATO summit

This morning's strikes were flagged well in advance, with US President Donald Trump openly musing about what America would target while speaking about the conflict at the NATO summit.

"It may be a big attack and it'll knock out a lot of stuff," he said sitting next to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"I give them a little warning. We're going to hit them hard tonight."

However, Mr Trump said the US was not planning to attack at the "highest level," saying bridges, power plants and desalination facilities would only be in the US military's sights "if we have to".

He also suggested Kharg Island, Iran's vital oil facility in the Strait of Hormuz, could be a target as well.

CENTCOM confirms US carrying out strikes on Iran

US Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed the US military is carrying out renewed strikes on Iran, at the direction of Mr Trump.

"The United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway," CENTCOM posted on social media.

Explosions have been heard in southern Iran

Good morning. Reports are emerging from Iran that explosions have been heard in the southern cities of Sirik and Bandar Abbas, both strongholds of the Iranian Navy bordering the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's state-owned Mehr News Agency says air defences have been activated in Bandar Abbas to counter "hostile targets".

Renewed US strikes on Iran have been all but guaranteed since US President Donald Trump last night told the NATO summit in Türkiye that the ceasefire between the two countries was "over".
