Kanlaon communities warned of lahar flows amid rains from Inday

BACOLOD CITY—A state seismologist has warned against destructive lahar flows in downstream communities of Kanlaon Volcano after it had a moderate eruption on Thursday morning.

Mari Andylene Y. Quintia, resident volcanologist at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), called on authorities and residents in nearby areas of Kanlaon to remain vigilant and continue to monitor updates.

Quintia said lahar flows could be spawned by the expected heavy rains of Typhoon ‘Inday.’

This came after a three-minute moderate explosive eruption occurred at Kanlaon Volcano at 7:33 a.m. on Thursday.

A loud, booming sound accompanying the eruption was heard in Canlaon City and the municipality of La Castellana, Quintia noted.

The volcano also emitted ash, resulting in ashfall over parts of Buluangan in San Carlos City and Canlaon City./coa
