Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto hosted former Thai Prime Minister (2001–2006) Thaksin Shinawatra and his family—including his daughter, former Prime Minister (2024–2025) Paetongtarn Shinawatra—at his private residence on Kertanegara Street in Jakarta on Wednesday evening.
The Indonesian Cabinet Secretariat released photos of the meeting on its social media account, describing the atmosphere as "warm and cordial."
“The warm and cordial meeting provided an opportunity to deepen a long-standing friendship. In a relaxed setting, the President and Thaksin also exchanged views on strategic global developments and regional dynamics,” the Cabinet Secretariat wrote.
Thaksin is a familiar figure in Indonesia, where he currently serves as a member of the advisory board for the Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara).
The Cabinet Secretariat noted that, through meetings like this, the Indonesian government continues to bolster its network of friendships and communication with world leaders and global figures, as part of efforts to expand cooperation and solidify Indonesia's position amid global dynamics.
President Prabowo previously met Paetongtarn Shinawatra during his state visit to Bangkok on May 19, 2025, when she was still serving as Thailand's prime minister.
On August 29, 2025, Thailand's Constitutional Court removed Paetongtarn from office following a public leak of a phone conversation with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen regarding a border dispute.
Shortly after her ouster, she also resigned as leader of the Pheu Thai Party.
The incident led to a shift in power within the Thai parliament in September 2025, when Anutin Charnvirakul of the conservative Bhumjaithai Party—a rival to Pheu Thai—won a parliamentary vote to become prime minister.
His party later won the nationwide general election in February 2026, re-electing him as the prime minister.
Meanwhile, a full royal pardon early last month released Thaksin from his sentence, lifting his probation ahead of its original September 9, 2026, expiration date.
