CEBU CITY, Philippines — Several local government units in Cebu suspended classes and, in some areas, government work on Thursday after ashfall from the moderately explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano reached parts of the province.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that Kanlaon erupted at around 5:51 a.m. Thursday. The eruption ended at approximately 7:36 a.m., sending a towering ash plume that prevailing winds carried toward western and central Cebu.
The Cebu Provincial Government earlier confirmed ashfall in Toledo City, Pinamungajan, and Aloguinsan, while neighboring local governments also issued precautionary advisories and class suspensions.

Phivolcs said Kanlaon produced a moderately explosive eruption that generated a massive ash plume visible even from neighboring islands.
The agency continues to maintain Alert Level 2, indicating ongoing volcanic unrest and the possibility of further sudden explosive eruptions.
Authorities continue to prohibit entry into the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone because of the risks posed by volcanic hazards, including ashfall, ballistic fragments, and rockfalls.
