
COTABATO CITY – At least 100 families have been evacuated to safer ground as the Nituan River in Barangay Nituan, Parang in Maguindanao del Norte overflowed Wednesday night.
The affected families are now housed at the Parang municipal gymnasium and at the Holy Rosary and Star of the Sea Chapel.
Parang Mayor Cahar Ibay ordered the municipal social welfare office to extend immediate assistance to displaced individuals whose houses were submerged by floodwater since Wednesday night until press time at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Light to moderate but continuous rains brought about by Typhoon Inday and the southwest monsoon (Habagat) led to the overflow of Nituan River and surrounding creeks, flooding residential areas.
In Talayan, Maguindanao del Sur, traffic in portions of the Cotabato-Isulan highway, particularly in Barangay Tambunan, was halted due to flash floods spawned by torrential rains affecting the province since Wednesday afternoon.
“We strongly advise all motorists traveling northbound along the national highway in Talayan municipality to postpone or defer non-essential travel due to heavy traffic congestion caused by rising floodwaters affecting several portions of the highway,” Col. John Michael Mangahis, Maguindanao Sur police provincial director, said.
He noted the highway remains impassable for light vehicles as of 1:30 p.m on Thursday.

Mangahis said the current flooding has significantly affected the normal traffic flow, posing risks to motorists and commuters.
“Those without urgent or essential travel are encouraged to remain at home until road conditions improve and authorities declare the route safe for travel,” Mangahis said.

Police personnel are actively assisting stranded motorists, managing traffic flow, and conducting road safety operations along the national highway to minimize risks and maintain order./coa
