
MANILA, Philippines — Batanes and two other areas in Northern Luzon were placed under the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 (TCWS) as Typhoon Inday (international name: Bavi) maintained its strength on Thursday afternoon, the state weather bureau said.
In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that Inday was last seen 780 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan as of 4 p.m. It slightly accelerated from its movement of 15 kilometers per hour (from the 11 a.m. bulletin) to 20 kph and was moving west-northwestward.

Inday maintained its strength as it was still carrying maximum wind speed of 165 kph and gustiness of up to 205 kph. Pagasa then noted that it will remain as a typhoon until it exits the Philippine area of responsibility by Saturday morning or afternoon.

Pagasa said that TCWS No. 2 was raised over the following:
Batanes
Eastern portion of Babuyan Islands (Babuyan Islands, Didicas Islands, Camiguin Islands
Northeasternmost portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana)
With this, the bureau said that wind speeds range from 62 to 88 kph and warned of “minor to moderate threat to life and property.”
The bureau added that TCWS No. 1 remained hoisted over the following areas:
Rest of Cagayan including the rest Babuyan Islands
Isabela
Northeastern portion of Quirino (Maddela)
Apayao
Northern portion of Abra (Tineg, Lagayan, Danglas, San Juan, Lagangilang, Licuan-Baay, Malibcong, Lacub, Daguioman, Dolores, La Paz)
Kalinga
Eastern portion of Mountain Province (Natonin, Paracelis)
Eastern portion of Ifugao (Aguinaldo, Alfonso Lista)
Ilocos Norte
Northern portion of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran)
Northern and central portions of Catanduanes (Pandan, Caramoran, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, Gigmoto, Baras, San Miguel)

Under this wind signal, wind speeds range from 39 to 61 kph with “minimal to minor threat to life and property.”
Meanwhile, Pagasa said that Inday is forecast to move generally northwestward while it remains over the Philippine Sea. It may pass closest to Extreme Northern Luzon between Friday evening or Saturday morning.

The bureau added that the typhoon will then move towards the southern islands of Japan and may make a landfall or pass close over the northern coast of Taiwan.
A gale warning is hoisted over the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Visayas. /jpv
