Jakarta (ANTARA) - The cooperation between Indonesia and India in procuring BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles serves as a strategic momentum to bolster the national defense industry, Governor of the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) Ace Hasan Syadzily stated.
Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, Ace noted that India has established itself as a nation capable of developing advanced defense technology, making this bilateral partnership a crucial opportunity for Indonesia.
According to him, the joint procurement opens extensive channels for technology transfer, which will directly enhance the domestic defense industry’s capability to master high-tier defense systems.
Beyond transferring hardware and technical knowledge, Ace emphasized that the partnership must be utilized to upgrade the skills of local human resources in the defense tech sector.
“We hope this cooperation will be part of strengthening the national defense industry through technology transfer that is well-followed up," he added.
The procurement contract for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was formalized during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Jakarta on Tuesday (July 7).
In a simultaneous push for aerial modernization, state-owned Indian defense manufacturer Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) inked a cooperation agreement with Indonesia’s Republikorp for the procurement of air-to-air missiles (AAMs).
The two defense agreements formed part of 16 bilateral cooperation documents exchanged between the two Indo-Pacific nations during Modi's state visit.
Indonesia's acquisition of the BrahMos missile system concludes a multi-year pursuit by Jakarta to reinforce its military inventory.
Prior to the official announcement, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty revealed that discussions had reached a highly advanced stage, paving the way for the historic signing.
Chakravorty pointed to India’s successful BrahMos export deal with the Philippines as a blueprint for regional defense cooperation, describing the supersonic cruise missile system as a highly reliable and cost-effective option for Southeast Asian countries seeking to strengthen their maritime deterrence.
