Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has emphasized that all efforts to strengthen infrastructure and regulatory integration within the national carbon trading ecosystem are ultimately aimed at improving public welfare.
Chair of the OJK Board of Commissioners Friderica Widyasari Dewi said during a press conference following the launch of the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK) here on Thursday that the government, including OJK, is committed to ensuring that Indonesia's green economy potential delivers tangible social benefits.
"We all hope that Indonesia, as a country with enormous natural resource potential, can become a leader in the global carbon market. More importantly, our goal is to improve public welfare," she said.
Dewi explained that, to realize these socio-economic benefits, the SRUK will function as the primary market, serving as the backbone of carbon trading before connecting to the secondary market at the Indonesia Carbon Exchange.
The system's integration is expected to increase capital inflows from both domestic and international investors, enabling funds to be channeled directly into community-based environmental programs.
According to a presentation from the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, the implementation of Indonesia's Carbon Economic Value (NEK) instrument is projected to attract up to US$5.8 billion in green investment.
In addition, the NEK instrument is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 570 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
OJK has also issued Financial Services Authority Regulation (POJK) No. 10 of 2024, which has been aligned with the regulatory framework on Carbon Economic Value (NEK) and the National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Control.
Through the regulatory harmonization, OJK seeks to ensure that the financial services sector has a strong legal foundation to finance decarbonization projects.
"With this regulation in place, we are even more confident that the financial services sector can support the implementation of carbon trading," she affirmed.
