Live updates: Trump flies home on old Air Force One over security concerns; Maine Democrats seek Platner successor

President returned from Turkey overnight Thursday, traveling on the first leg of the trip on an older Air Force One jet, on the guidance of Secret Service.

The move quickly elevated concern about the security of the newly refurbished Qatari jet the president used last week.

The decision came amid the backdrop of new hostilities with Iran.

The U.S. and Iranian militaries exchanged more intense strikes overnight Thursday, as Trump on Wednesday said he considered the 60-day ceasefire between them to be “over.” Trump also referred to Iranian efforts to kill him on Wednesday.

U.S. Central Command said late Wednesday that the U.S. military struck about 90 Iranian military targets.

The escalation poses political risks for Trump at home and throws a wrench into lawmakers plans. The apparent end of the ceasefire is also driving up oil prices, sparking political trouble for Republicans with the midterm election cycle in full swing.

Maine Democrats now face the task of finding a new candidate to face Sen. Susan Collins (R) with Graham Platner’s Wednesday night exit from the race.

Trump on Thursday will attend an intelligence briefing and a pair of policy meetings in the afternoon.

In Palm Beach, the Palm Beach International Airport will take on its new name, Donald J. Trump International Airport, on Thursday.
