Palm Beach International Airport officially changed its name to Donald J. Trump International Airport on Thursday — the latest success in President Trump’s efforts to leave his mark on iconic buildings and landmarks.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed legislation authorizing this renaming in March. The state’s Republican Party celebrated the bill’s enactment in a social media post, saying, “Florida is honored to be home to this landmark tribute” to the president.
The Federal Aviation Authority said in a statement to The Hill that airline travelers will continue to see “PBI” — the three-letter location identifier for the airport — on their flight documents until the International Air Transport Association updates the designation to “DJT” on Aug. 18.
Additionally, the airport noted in a page on its website that changes to signage, branding and “public-facing materials” reflecting this new name will “occur in phases.”
Officials added that no airline operations, routes or schedules will be impacted during this renaming period. The project is expected to cost around $5.5 million, according to an estimate from the Palm Beach County Department of Airports.
The state has approved $2.75 million of this total anticipated cost. The remaining amount will be covered by the Department of Airports’ operating budget and capital improvement program, according to the airport.
The airport’s name change follows similar efforts from the Trump administration to rename other buildings and structures after the president. On Thursday afternoon, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the newly renamed Donald J. Trump Bridge in East Tennessee.
“In many ways, Tennessee embodies the best of what President Trump is building nationally as we place American workers, manufacturers, and families back at the core of our policies where they belong,” Bessent wrote in a social media post alongside a photo of him and Tennessee Republicans in front of the bridge’s new sign.
Other renaming efforts have been less successful. The president’s attempt to attach his name to the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts has faced significant controversy and legal roadblocks. A judge ordered the iconic center to take down the president’s name from its facade — a ruling the administration has appealed.
