
TACLOBAN CITY — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Balangiga, Eastern Samar, shortly after midnight on Friday (July 10), shaking parts of Eastern Visayas but causing no reported damage, according to state seismologists.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tectonic earthquake occurred at 12:46 a.m. Its epicenter was located about 33 kilometers south-southwest of Balangiga, Eastern Samar, at a depth of 91 kilometers.
Phivolcs recorded Instrumental Intensity III in the Leyte towns of Abuyog, Dulag, and Mahaplag.

Instrumental Intensity II was observed in Hinundayan, Southern Leyte, and Alangalang, Leyte.
Meanwhile, Instrumental Intensity I was recorded in Baybay City and Hilongos in Leyte; Sogod in Southern Leyte; Villareal in Samar; San Francisco in Cebu; and Surigao City in Surigao del Norte.
Phivolcs said the earthquake is not expected to cause damage and that no significant aftershocks are anticipated.
Eastern Samar lies near the Philippine Trench, one of the country’s most active seismic zones, making earthquakes a common occurrence in the province and other parts of Eastern Visayas. /das
