BACOLOD CITY – The Office of Civil Defense-Negros Island Region (OCD-NIR) monitored ashfall and sulfuric smell in at least two local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental after the moderately explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Thursday.
Up north in San Carlos City, residents of Barangay Quezon reported a sulfuric odor, while in the upper portions of Barangay Buluangan, both ashfall and a sulfuric smell were monitored.

“We are in close coordination with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and also coordinating with concerned LGUs for situation updates,” it said in the report.
Kanlaon Volcano, which is under Alert Level 2 or moderate level of volcanic unrest, registered a moderately explosive eruption at the summit crater at 7:33 a.m, lasting three minutes, based on the seismic and infrasound records.

“This event generated a dark gray eruption plume that rose two to three kilometers above the crater before drifting to the general east. Poorly visible pyroclastic density currents descended the southeastern slopes possibly within a kilometer of the summit crater,” the Phivolcs said in a report.
With its current alert level status, entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone must be strictly prohibited, it added. (PNA)
