Israel recently shared intelligence with the U.S. that reportedly indicted a new plot from Iran to assassinate President Trump, according to a Wall Street Journal article published Thursday.
The report, which cited people familiar with the matter, said Israeli officials warned the U.S. of what they viewed as a fresh threat against the president that would heighten already existing tensions between Washington and Tehran amid the war.
The Hill reached out to the White House for comment.
Two sources also told CNN about the warnings, with one source telling the outlet that the warning came this week.
Other U.S. officials suggested to CNN, however, that the new Israeli intelligence could have been an attempt to influence Trump’s thinking as he weighs whether to escalate U.S. military action against Iran.
The relationship between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump has become increasingly strained over the future of war, namely in a heated phone call between the two, where Trump called the Israeli prime minister “crazy.”
Netanyahu has pushed for increased military intervention in the Middle East, while Trump initially sought to preserve the fragile ceasefire agreement.
Trump on Wednesday suggested that he was Iran’s “No. 1 target” after he called off the interim ceasefire agreement between the two countries following an exchange of overnight retaliatory strikes.
“I’m No. 1 on the kill list for Iran,” Trump told reporters at the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey.
He pointed to the intelligence that he received that day.
“I’m on every list. I saw this morning, I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a little bit lucky, but that maybe doesn’t last very long,” he said.
The reported intelligence follows public calls in Iran for retaliation against Trump over the war. During this week’s funeral processions for slain Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Reuters reported that mourners chanted “Death to America,” and a banner was displayed on the streets reading, “We Will Kill Trump.”
