Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Foreign Ministry stated that it is closely monitoring China's long-range ballistic missile test earlier this week, while emphasizing that the test was within China's rights.
"Indonesia is paying close attention to the ballistic missile test," Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated during a press briefing on Thursday.
She noted that international law does not prohibit the ownership of ballistic missiles or their testing, as carried out by Beijing.
Beijing has also issued a notification about the missile test, she said, while describing it as an important confidence-building measure to ensure transparency for the international community.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy on Monday (July 6) conducted a series of long-range ballistic missile tests launched from a nuclear-powered submarine in the southern Pacific Ocean.
China's Xinhua News Agency reported that the strategic missile carried a dummy warhead toward relevant high seas of the Pacific Ocean at 12:01 p.m. and landed "precisely within the designated waters." They did not detail the tested missile types.
However, analysts stated that China was testing its JL-2 or JL-3 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) launched from its 094A-type submarine.
On the same day, the Chinese government declared that the ballistic missile test was part of a regular military exercise and complied with international law and international practice.
"It is a routine arrangement in China’s annual military training program. It is consistent with international law and customary international practice and is not directed at any specific country or target," Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning stated during the press conference in Beijing.
Meanwhile, the ballistic missile test has raised concerns among other countries, with authorities in Japan, South Korea, and the United States expressing their unease.
