Thai Airways International (THAI) suspends one flight between Bangkok and Taipei on Friday and five more on Saturday as Typhoon Bavi approaches the island.
The airline cancelled TG636 leaving for Taiwan at 5.15pm on Friday, THAI said in a Facebook announcement.
Flights suspended on Saturday:
TG637 leaving Taipei at 7.55am
TG632 leaving Bangkok at 8.25am
TG633 leaving Taipei at 2.05pm
TG634 leaving Bangkok at 12.40pm
TG635 leaving Taipei at 6.50pm
Taiwan's financial markets closed for the day, with a large swathe of the north and east also off work. The Taipei city government set up stations for residents to collect sandbags.
Bavi is not expected to make landfall in Taiwan but will dump huge amounts of rain on the island — some areas could get up to one metre of rain — starting late on Friday.
The Taiwanese government said more than 1,000 people have been evacuated, mainly from the mountainous eastern coast, and nearly 29,000 military personnel were on standby to help relief efforts.
"Although the typhoon has weakened slightly and has been downgraded to a moderate typhoon, its storm radius is large and it may still bring strong winds and heavy rain to many areas," President Lai Ching‑te wrote on his Facebook page.
Taiwan's airlines have cancelled all flights on Saturday from Taoyuan International Airport outside Taipei.
The Thailand Trade and Economic Office in Taipei advised all Thais in Taiwan to closely follow government announcements and updated storm information.
Thais can contact the office's hotline at 095‑223‑8931 for assistance.
