The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN’s) 3rd session of Mandatory Continuing Professional Development, MCPD programme has opened in Kano with a call on professional accountants to continue to strengthen governance, protect public resources and contribute to national development.
The conference themed ‘Leadership, Strategy and Professional excellence’ is an annual mandatory training once every year for all members to maintain standards in the accounting profession.
President of the association, Hajia Zuwairat Talatu Kishimi said the training reflects the profound truth about the profession where knowledge qualifies an accountant but professional judgement distinguishes one, noting that the decision of a professional accountant determines whether an economy becomes stronger or not.
She implores Accountants to challenge their assumptions and invest in training to be strategically inclined, digitally competent and value-driven.
“By integrating predictive analytics, scenario planning frameworks and robust enterprise resource planning system, professional accountants can optimise resource allocation, model future risks and provide the real-time decision support necessary to navigate economic volatility and safeguard organisational assets,” she said.
Delivering a paper on strengthening revenue systems for fiscal sustainability, Professor Fatima Alfa Tahir identified weak institutions, leakages, informal economy and inconsistent policies shaped by politics as some of the key challenges to the nation’s revenue systems.
She said revenue systems drive sustainability but technology is essential just as leadership matters to meet public service demands and support long term economic growth.
Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf represented by Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Musa Suleiman Shanono said the role of professional accountants in public life is imperative in providing financial intelligence and allowing the government to make the right decision.
The governor announced that the state’s internally generated revenue has risen from 2 billion naira to 8 billion naira monthly after reengineering revenue collection in the state, saying the government is committed to prudent financial management and judicious allocation of resources.
The governor also announced that 155 qualified accountants in the state are being sponsored for the training reflecting his administration’s commitment to human capital development.
Governor Nasir Idris, represented by his commissioner for local commissioner and chieftaincy affairs, Abubakar Dutsen Mari, said Kebbi state is ready to collaborate with ANAN to harness resources the state is blessed with.
