Prime Minister Robert Abela has visited the newly established police squad dedicated to Paceville, reaffirming the government’s commitment to boosting public safety in one of Malta’s busiest entertainment hubs.
Accompanied by Home Affairs and Security Minister Glenn Bedingfield and Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà, Abela met officers tasked with maintaining order and strengthening police presence in Paceville, particularly during the busy summer season.
During the visit, the Prime Minister said the government will continue investing in additional police resources to ensure Malta remains a safe country for both residents and visitors.
“Tourists should enjoy everything Malta has to offer while also showing respect towards the Maltese people,” Abela said, describing the specialised squad as an important step towards creating safer communities.
The unit officially began operating in May and is made up of 31 officers, including 23 constables and eight sergeants. It works alongside the Malta Tourism Authority, Town Centre Management and other police units, including the Immigration Section and the Anti-Drug Squad, to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour and other public order issues in the area.
The squad’s work also complements Malta’s Community Policing teams, which operate in localities including Swieqi, St Julian’s, Gżira and Buġibba through regular patrols, enforcement, business inspections and direct engagement with residents and business owners.
During the visit, the government also highlighted the new legal notice introduced earlier this week requiring non-residents who commit minor offences in Malta to pay fines immediately on the spot.
The measure aims to improve enforcement while preserving the right to challenge fines through the legal process.
Will the new dedicated police squad and tougher enforcement measures make Paceville safer for residents, workers and visitors?
