Kathmandu. The Independent Drivers Foundation Nepal has called on the government to form an independent, impartial, and high-level investigation committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of ride-sharing driver Ganesh Nepali, who died after attempting self-immolation outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor.
In a statement issued on Friday, the foundation expressed deep sorrow over Nepali's death and said a fair, transparent, and independent investigation is necessary to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
Citing information available in the public domain and claims made by various parties, the foundation said questions have been raised over the municipal police's decision to place a wheel lock on Nepali's motorcycle while he was reportedly on a ride, as well as allegations regarding the use of a Taser during the subsequent events.
The foundation stated that Nepali attempted self-immolation following the incident and later died while undergoing treatment.
It also demanded legal action against any individual or institution found responsible if the investigation confirms negligence, misconduct, or any unlawful act.
At the same time, the foundation urged ride-sharing drivers and the general public to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information or rumors, and seek justice through lawful and peaceful means.
Nepali, a resident of Soru Rural Municipality–1, Mugu, who had been living in Bhaktapur, attempted self-immolation on Thursday afternoon after a dispute with municipal police over a wheel lock placed on his motorcycle outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor.
He was rescued from the scene and rushed to Bir Hospital, where he died at around 11:20 a.m. on Friday while undergoing treatment.
