Kathmandu. Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Gyanendra Shahi has criticized Home Minister Sudan Gurung, accusing the government of failing to take Ganesh Nepali's treatment seriously after the ride-sharing driver died following a self-immolation attempt outside the Department of Passports.
Speaking during Friday's House of Representatives meeting, Shahi alleged that the Home Minister was more focused on publicity than ensuring timely medical care for the victim.
"I want to ask the Home Minister, are you a Home Minister or a content creator?" Shahi said.
He claimed that while Ganesh Nepali needed urgent treatment, the Home Minister was busy appearing in front of cameras.
"Yesterday, the Home Minister was running around with cameras like a film hero, sometimes at the airport, sometimes elsewhere. If the real intention had been to provide treatment, Ganesh Nepali would not have died today," he said.
Shahi argued that the Home Minister's primary responsibility is to protect lives rather than produce content for social media.
"It doesn't matter where the Home Minister went today or how much content he created for YouTube. What matters is whether people's lives were saved by his decisions," he said.
The RPP lawmaker further claimed that Ganesh Nepali's life could have been saved if he had been promptly transferred to a better-equipped hospital or airlifted to New Delhi for advanced treatment.
"If, instead of running around at the airport, a plane had been arranged to take Nepali to Delhi, his life could have been saved," Shahi said.
He also urged the Home Minister to act responsibly, stating that publicity-driven activities may attract temporary attention but do not deliver meaningful results.
"I request the Home Minister to be responsible—to be the country's Home Minister, not a content creator. Ministers are not meant to put on shows in the streets; they are meant to make decisions and ensure they are implemented," he said.
