Acquittals for Fascist salutes at Ramelli commemoration upheld

'Merely a homage and not a crime' says court

A Milan appeals court on Friday

upheld the acquittals of 23 far-rightists who gave Fascist

salutes on the annual commemoration in April 2019 of a

neo-Fascist youth killed by leftist militants in 1975.

The 23 were among about 1,000 rightists who delivered the banned

salute and shouted "present and correct" at the ceremony for

Sergio Ramelli on 29 April 2019.

The assassination of Ramelli, a member of the neo-Fascist

Italian Social Movement's (MSI) youth wing Fronte della

Gioventù, by members of Avanguardia Operaia (Workers Vanguard)

took place in Milan during a period of violent and often deadly

confrontations between rightists and leftists in Italy.

Fascist salutes are banned by law in Italy and convictions for

them have come in other cases.

In the Ramelli case the court ruled that they were "merely a

homage and not a crime".
