Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, have mourned the passing of the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Benin City, His Grace, Most Reverend Augustine Obiora Akubeze.
Archbishop Akubueze died in Benin City on July 9, 2026, at the age of 69.
The duo described his passing as a monumental loss to the Catholic Church, Edo State, Nigeria and the global Christian community.
Okpebholo, in his condolence message by his spokesperson, Patrick Ebojele, said the late Archbishop devoted his life to the service of God and humanity, leaving behind an enduring legacy of faith, compassion, integrity and selfless leadership.

He said the Archbishop distinguished himself as a humble shepherd and courageous advocate for justice, peace and good governance throughout his ministry, both as Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City and as former President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria.
Oshiomhole, in a statement by his spokesperson, Victor Oshioke, said the Archbishop lived a Godly life worthy of emulation.
He described late Ahubueze as a courageous witness to the Gospel, a compassionate shepherd and a humble servant of God whose simplicity, accessibility, and unwavering commitment to truth and justice earned him the respect of Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
“His counsel was measured, his convictions were principled, and his life was a testament to selfless service,” Oshiomhole said.
