Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is seeking to modernize its maritime industry through a strategic partnership with Russia, aiming to secure technology transfers, strengthen domestic shipbuilding and expand its share of Southeast Asia's shipping market, the Industry Ministry said.
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the initiative aims to upgrade domestic shipyards, improve workforce skills and develop joint shipbuilding projects.
"Cooperation in the shipping industry with Russia offers Indonesia an opportunity to strengthen its maritime industry through investment, technology transfer, workforce development and joint production," Agus said in a statement on Friday.

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, depends heavily on shipping for logistics, fisheries, offshore energy and inter-island transportation.
Russia has extensive expertise in maritime development, including commercial ship design and construction, advanced propulsion systems and complex marine engineering.
The ministry said the strengths of both countries complement each other in building a more resilient shipping industry.
It added that bilateral cooperation opportunities have expanded following the signing of the Indonesia-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement.
The agreement is expected to boost trade, investment, industrial partnerships and technology exchanges between Indonesia and members of the Eurasian Economic Union.
Speaking in Yekaterinburg on Wednesday, Director General for Industrial Resilience, Regionalization and International Industrial Access Tri Supondy said both countries could benefit from closer cooperation.
He said Indonesia offers a large market and expanding industrial capacity, while Russia contributes technological expertise and broad experience in building various types of vessels.
