NDRRMC: 17 dead, 514,700 affected by Inday, habagat

MANILA, Philippines — At least 17 people were reported dead while around 514,700 individuals were affected by the onslaught of Typhoon Inday (international name: Bavi) and the southwest monsoon or habagat, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Saturday.

Based on the NDRRMC’s latest report as of 6 a.m., the deaths were caused by drowning and landslide. Of this figure, 10 came from Malapatan in Sarangani, five from Calanongas in Lanao del Sur, and two from Bukidnon.

The NDRRMC also reported four injuries from the landslide, with two from Calanongas in Lanao del Sur, and one each from Torrijos in Marinduque and Malapatan in Sarangani. It added that nine individuals were missing, with six of them coming from Calanogas in Lanao del Sur and three from Malapatan in Sarangani.

The agency noted that casualty figures were still being validated.

Meanwhile, it said the typhoon and southwest monsoon affected 112,500 families of 514,700 individuals. The weather systems also displaced 2,900 families now staying in 77 evacuation centers.

It added that around P16.41 million worth of assistance has been provided to affected individuals.

In a separate advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Inday exited the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) as of 8:20 a.m. on Saturday.

Inday was last seen 590 kilometers north-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes as of 10 a.m. Inday exited the PAR at 8:20 a.m.

The typhoon was still packing a maximum wind speed of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 170 kph. /das
