Mayon Volcano lava effusion persists for 187th day — Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — An effusive eruption occurred at Mayon Volcano in Albay for the 187th consecutive day early Saturday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The Phivolcs said footage and photos recorded the lava effusion from 4:11 a.m. to 4:40 a.m.

“Effusive eruption at Mayon Volcano continues for the 187th consecutive day, generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or ‘uson’ and rockfalls,” Phivolcs said in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, the daily 24-hour monitoring said the volcano logged 10 volcanic earthquakes, 241 rockfall events, and six PDCs. The crater glow remained visible to the naked eye.

The volcano also released 8,239 tons of sulfur dioxide on Friday, which was significantly greater than Thursday’s record of 5,036 tons.

As the volcano remained under Alert Level 3, which signifies intensified unrest, Phivolcs still prohibited entry within a six-kilometer radius or the permanent danger zone and flying of any aircraft close to the volcano.

Phivolcs also reminded nearby communities of possible hazards such as rockfalls, ballistic fragments, lava flows, PDCs, moderate-sized explosions, and lahars. /das
